“One Tree Equals Ten Sons”: CM Yogi Adityanath Stresses Urgency of Forest Conservation

Lucknow: Emphasizing the critical role of forests in sustaining life and maintaining ecological balance, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the occasion of International Day of Forests said that protecting forests is not just an environmental necessity but a moral responsibility.

Speaking at the inauguration of the National Forestry Dialogue at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, the Chief Minister invoked ancient Indian wisdom, stating, “A single tree is equivalent to ten sons,” underlining the supreme importance of trees in sustaining life.

Massive Afforestation Drive and Rising Green Cover

Highlighting achievements, the Chief Minister said that Uttar Pradesh has planted over 242 crore saplings in the past nine years, significantly boosting forest cover to nearly 10%. He added that the state aims to increase this further to around 16–17% in line with its population share.

He noted that afforestation campaigns have evolved into a जन आंदोलन (people’s movement), which has been key to their success. Large-scale plantation drives have been undertaken along rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarayu, as well as along expressways and highways.

Growth in Ramsar Sites and Wetland Conservation

The Chief Minister pointed out that the number of Ramsar Sites in the state has grown from just one in 2017 to 11 at present, with a long-term target of reaching 100. These wetlands are vital for biodiversity conservation, tourism, and water management, while also preventing encroachment.

Green Economy and Carbon Initiatives

Positioning forests as a driver of economic growth, the Chief Minister highlighted the development of 2,467 green economy models based on forest resources. Uttar Pradesh has also emerged as the first state in India to distribute financial benefits to farmers under carbon credit projects.

He stressed the need to promote carbon finance, eco-tourism, and sustainable livelihoods, citing initiatives in Dudhwa National Park where eco-tourism is being actively encouraged.

Biodiversity Gains and Wildlife Protection

The Chief Minister underscored improvements in biodiversity, particularly the revival of the Ganges river dolphin population. “Earlier, dolphin sightings had almost vanished, but today their numbers have risen significantly,” he said, noting that Uttar Pradesh now accounts for 2,397 of India’s 6,327 dolphins.

He also highlighted measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, which has been categorized as a disaster in the state to ensure prompt response and compensation.

Push for Clean Energy and Sustainability

Reaffirming the state’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality, Yogi Adityanath said that policies promoting electric vehicles, solar energy, and green hydrogen are being implemented.

Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, over 4 lakh rooftop solar units have been installed, generating more than 1,400 MW of electricity. The state has also set a target of developing 22,000 MW of renewable energy over the next five years.

Honouring Courage and Contributions

During the event, the Chief Minister felicitated brave children, forest personnel, and social organizations for their contributions to environmental protection.

Among those honoured were young achievers who displayed courage during wildlife encounters, as well as forest department staff and NGOs working in conservation. Farmers benefiting from carbon credit projects were also presented with cheques.

Call for People’s Participation

Concluding his address, the Chief Minister urged citizens to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts. He emphasized that turning forest protection into a mass movement is essential for long-term sustainability.

“Forests are the foundation of life—if forests exist, water, air, and life will continue to thrive,” he said, calling for collective action to safeguard nature for future generations.

The event highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s multi-pronged strategy combining afforestation, biodiversity conservation, and green economic initiatives, positioning the state as a key player in India’s environmental sustainability efforts.
